One of the first choices when booking Benagil Cave tours is where to leave from. Trips run from a string of towns along the central Algarve, and the departure point shapes everything: how long you are on the water, what you see on the way, the type of boat, and the price. How departure town changes the trip
The rule of thumb is simple: the closer the port, the shorter and cheaper the trip and the more of your time is spent at the cave itself. The further towns give you a longer cruise, more coastline and often a dolphin search or a swim stop, at a higher price. Neither is better — it depends on where you are staying and what you want.

Benagil beach
Departing from Benagil beach itself puts you next door to the cave, so within minutes of launching you are there. These are the shortest and cheapest trips — typically an hour on a traditional boat — and ideal if you want the cave without a half-day commitment. The catch is parking: the cliff-top car park fills early in summer, so arrive before mid-morning.
Carvoeiro and Praia do Carvalho
Just west of Benagil, Carvoeiro and the nearby Praia do Carvalho are the launch points for many guided kayak tours. The paddle to the cave is short, and this stretch of coast is riddled with arches and grottoes worth exploring on the way. Good for active travellers who want a water-level experience close to the cave.
Armação de Pêra
A short hop east of Benagil, Armação de Pêra runs quick, low-cost boat trips with local skippers — often an hour or so, capped at small numbers. A solid choice if you are based nearby and want a straightforward, good-value boat run to the cave and back.
Portimão and Lagoa
About 25 minutes from the cave by sea, Portimão offers larger, more comfortable boats and catamarans. The extra distance means a longer cruise past the cliffs and beaches west of Benagil. Good for travellers who want more comfort and a fuller trip without going all the way to Albufeira or Lagos.
Albufeira
Albufeira’s big marina is the hub for catamaran cruises — roughly 30 minutes from the cave — and many of these combine Benagil with a dedicated dolphin search and a swim stop. The boats are larger, with shade, toilets and sometimes food and a bar, and several are wheelchair-accessible. This is the choice for a relaxed half-day at sea rather than a quick cave run.
Lagos and Vilamoura
These are the furthest towns, west (Lagos) and east (Vilamoura) of the cave, with the longest runs and usually the highest prices. They make sense if you are staying there and would rather not drive along the coast, and the extra time on the water buys you a long, scenic cruise. Vilamoura is also home to a purpose-built cave-entry boat that gets inside the chamber more often than most.

Drive times from the main resorts
If you are not staying in the departure town, factor in the drive. From the western resorts around Lagos and Praia da Luz, the Lagos boats are closest; from Carvoeiro and Ferragudo, Benagil and Carvoeiro are on your doorstep; from Albufeira and Vilamoura, the eastern catamarans save you a coastal drive. Reaching Benagil beach from a distant resort in peak season can mean a slow drive and a full car park, so a marina nearer your base is often the easier trip even if the cruise is a little longer.
What else to do in each town
The departure port can be part of the day. Lagos has a handsome old town and the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade; Portimão has Praia da Rocha and its seafood restaurants; Albufeira and Vilamoura have big marinas full of bars and cafes; and Carvoeiro is a pretty, low-key resort built around its beach. Benagil and Armação de Pêra are quieter, more about the boat than the town.

Getting between the towns
The N125 runs the length of this coast and links every departure town, with the A22 motorway faster for longer hops. Buses connect the larger towns but are slow for a timed boat departure, so a car or taxi is the practical choice if your tour leaves from somewhere other than your base. Always allow spare time to park and find the meeting point, which can take longer than you expect at a busy marina.
Parking and meeting points by town
Where you meet the boat, and where you leave the car, varies a lot by town and is worth checking before you set off. At Benagil, the free cliff-top car park fills early and the boats leave from the sand at the bottom of the stairs. At the marinas — Albufeira, Portimão, Vilamoura, Lagos — you park in or near the marina and walk to a ticket office, which can be a five- to ten-minute walk and easy to lose time finding at a busy quay. Armação de Pêra and Carvoeiro launch closer to their beaches. Your booking confirmation gives the exact meeting spot and a check-in time, usually fifteen to thirty minutes before departure; build in a buffer, because arriving flustered at the last minute is the quickest way to sour the start of a good day.
One base, or several?
If Benagil is a highlight of a wider Algarve trip, there is no need to relocate for it — the coast is compact, and a boat from your nearest marina reaches the cave from almost anywhere between Lagos and Vilamoura. Pick the closest departure to where you are already staying and save the driving for the places a boat cannot take you.
