The Algar de Benagil sits at the base of the cliffs just east of Benagil beach, in the parish of Lagoa on the central Algarve. There is no path to it and no way in on foot — you reach the cave only from the sea. Since 2024 that means a licensed boat or a guided kayak or stand-up paddleboard. How you get into Benagil Cave
Every visit is by water. Licensed boats run from Benagil beach and from towns along the coast; when the swell allows they slip briefly into the chamber — usually a minute or two — so you can look up at the skylight and out over the beach inside. Guided kayak and SUP tours take you at water level and can linger a little longer when conditions are calm. The interior beach itself is off limits to everyone (see the rules below).
What you can and can’t do
- Allowed: entering by licensed boat when the sea permits; guided kayak or SUP tours, at a ratio of one guide per six kayaks; photography from the water; open-sea swim stops on boat tours away from the cave.
- Not allowed: swimming into the cave from Benagil beach; stepping onto the sand inside; unguided kayak or SUP hire near the cave; any maritime activity between sunset and sunrise.
Where tours leave from
Closer ports mean a shorter run and more time near the cave; the further towns add coastline and often a dolphin search. Prices rise roughly with distance.

Getting there and parking
The village of Benagil is signposted off the N125 near Lagoa. There is a free car park on the cliff-top above Benagil beach; from it a stairway drops to the sand where the beach-based boats leave, about a five-minute walk down. In July and August the car park fills early, so arrive before mid-morning or use a tour that departs from a marina with its own parking. Benagil is roughly 25 minutes from Portimão and 30 minutes from Albufeira by road.
Best time of day and year
Late morning is the sweet spot: that is when the sun drops through the roof opening and lights the beach inside. Seas are usually calmest early in the day, and the earliest departures meet the fewest other boats at the cave mouth. The main season runs from May to September, when the water is warmest and every operator is running; winter has far fewer departures and more weather cancellations, though the cave is open water all year.
